She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean, and for this she received the US Distinguished Flying Cross. Doing this, she inspired many people who were out of work to follow their dreams no matter what stood in their way. 

Amelia was a true leader facing challenges under difficult circumstances and helping others see they could too. Amelia is an example of a great visionary with an adventurous spirit so essential to the American persona.
